Disastrous Earthquake in Nepal : Nation in shock

Over 1000 swayamsevaks belonging to Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh Nepal, Jankalyan Pratishthan, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Nepal, Pashupati Shiksha Prasar Samiti, Pragyik Vidyarthi Parishad and other organizations have worked round the clock in rescue and relief operations after the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Swayamsevaks are working hard to reach to the affected common people in remote areas where no aid has reached yet at times putting their own life at risk.

The swayamsevaks swung into the rescue and relief work just 3 hour after the devastating earthquake which struck Nepal at 1156 hours on 25th April. They started distributing drinking water, riceflakes and namkeen and plastic tents as an immediate relief in many places of Nepal including Shantinagar, Anamnagar, Gaushala, Kalikasthan in Kathmandu. Till today, Swayamsevaks have reached with the relief material upto places like Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Dhading, Kabhre, Lalitpur, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Ramechhap, Sindhupalchok  mountain districts. RSS joint General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale traveled upto Dhading and Bhaktapur districts and distributed material like ration, blankets and tarpaulin. Local populace was overwhelmed to see sangh karyakartas reaching the villages before the government machinery for help.
Keshav Dham, office of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh Nepal at Kathmandu became the coordination center for all the relief activities since 25th April evening. People from all over the world were contacting the karyalay for locating and reaching there near and dear ones who had been in Nepal for pilgrimage, tourism or trekking. Lists were made for all such queries and information obtained from relief teams of Nepalese and Bharatiya government regarding people stranded due to earthquake was passed on to the relatives. Over 6000 people benefitted by this activity. Over 10000 people stranded at Kathmandu and other places were helped to reach their homes with swayamsevaks’ efforts and guidance. Not only this, but over 100 people deceased in the earthquake were identified and handed over to their relatives.
There is a long queue of the corpses in the Tribhuvan University teaching Hospital, Civil Hospital, Bir Hhospital and Trauma Center. They are being identified. A team of sangh karyakartas is working at the hospital in tasks like fetching the dead bodies, assisting Doctors in applying chemical to them, putting them in the bags and readying for transportation.The work of assisting the injured in getting admission in the hospital, getting Doctor’s examination done and providing medicines is going on in parallel. Two teams are operating at the hospital round the clock, one for patients and other for the deceased.Similarly, over 50 teams are being formed and sent to various hospitals, relief camps and affected districts.
A press conference giving information about various relief activities being carried out by sangh, was arranged on behalf of Hindu Swayasevak Sangh – Nepal prachar vibhag on 30th April at the Keshav Dham - HSS Nepal Central office. Detail information about various service activities and relief work undertaken by sangh karyakartas since 25th April was conveyed in this press conference. RSS joint general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale addressed the press conference. He described in detail various efforts of swayamsevaks all over the world to collect relief material for the earthquake affected besides the work done in Nepal. At first, he appreciated the work done by teams who rescued people trapped in the debris and stressed that this task needs to be done on a priority basis. He also narrated in detail the work done in reaching the homeless populace and providing them basic relief material. He also explained the proposals being actively considered for rehabilitation of these people by providing houses in future.
More than 6000 have lost their lives in this tragic earthquake as per latest information. The number may increase and is feared to touch 15,000 or so. Number of injured has crossed 8000. This may also cross 20,000. The government has not yet announced the extent of overall damage including human lives, property and cattle etc. but it is slated to be more than 1 lakh crore as per initial estimates.
Several temples, mutts and heritage bulildings of archaeological importance have been flattened in different parts of the country including Kathmandu. These include Patan Krishna Mandir, Patan Darbar Square, Basantpur Hanuman Dhoka Darbar square, Bhaktapur Darbar square, Taleju Mandir which have been destroyed. Pauranik and culturally important Nine-storey tower, famous by the name Bhimsen Dharahara has also been collapsed completely. There is a concern about safety and re - consecration of many murthis ( idols ) of historical, cultural and pauranic significance, some even 5000 years old. 32 districts have been affected by this earthquake. 12 Districts like Sindhupal chok, Ramechap, dhading, Rasuva, Nuvakot, Kamre, Lamjung, Gorkha, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kathmandu and dolkha are the main affected ones. Among these, Sindhupalchok, Ramechhap, Dhading, Rasuwa, Lamjung, Gorkha, Bhaktapur are such where 90 % of the villages have been reduced to rubble. These are the villages where none could reach for three days since the earthquake as all the roads were cut off. Only alternative was helicopter, thru which some food items and other relief material could reach them. Several affected districts including Kathmandu are still having deserted look. People are fleeing these districts and Kathmandu due the fear of epidemics. It cannot be said with certainty when they will return and when life would become normal, looks like it will take at least a fortnight.
